Hindustan Motors will be manufacturing the Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia.

NEW DELHI

You know what we don't like about the Lancer Cedia, just announced and displayed at the Auto Expo 2006 in New Delhi? It is not the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.

Lest we come across as permanently complaining about every company that has deigned to participate in the Auto Expo 2006, let us also say that the Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia is a good car. It looks different, and almost anything is a welcome change from the ubiquitous Mitsubishi Lancers around.

But a Lancer Cedia? I mean, after almost a decade, this is all that Mitsubishi can think about?

The new Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia definitely looks a bit more aggressive, and has a distinct front end with those two nostrils. The bonnet has a ridge much like that of the Honda City. The flanks and the rear of the car are clearly uninspiring, neither Skoda's bricklike quality, nor the aggressive lines of an EVO.

A 4 cylinder engine churns out 125 bhp, and the car is geared for acceleration and a decent top end.

Our prediction? This car will hardly be a hot seller in India. It is too jaded, too 90s a design. Suzuki had the guts to take the Indian market by the scruff of its neck with its Swift - but then we can't expect anything like that out of the manufacturers of the decades-old Hindustan Ambassador can we?
