MySpace revamp to take on Facebook

MySpace has revamped its look to attract more members and help them with better grouping environment. MySpace has redesigned the appearance and enhanced functions of its home page, site navigation, search, MySpaceTV Player, a video player, and Profile Editor. The Profile Editor will help users to customize their profiles.

MySpace will now sport a spanking new interface, heightened security, availability on mobile and instant-messaging services — and the ability to create categories of friends at work, school and family, among dozens of other new features.

The Search capabilities of MySpace have been improved with results on other users, music and video. The most relevant tab will be automatically highlighted, and searches on other users will include the ability to filter by location, gender, or age and invite them to be friends. There will be a new navigation bar that will provide easy access to messaging, friends, and other community features from wherever users are, not just on the home page.

The News Corp-owned company aims to become one of the leading players in webspace with the relaunch. According to the company, this is an attempt to widen its demographics and boost user engagement on the site. They claim that with the new features and look, MySpace would change the way people interact with the site and the brands.

MySpace is currently ranked third in total number of searches by any site. Company is working with Lucene Open-Source engine and community. This is for the first time that MySpace has contributed to the open-source community. MySpace has about 110 million users worldwide. MySpace plans to compete with Facebook in the global market by increasing user base.

According to Tom Anderson, MySpace’s co-founder and president, the relaunch is a part exercise to change the perception that the site is reserved for teens and adults.  There will be enough features to make the site comfortable for average Internet users.
