Twenty-year-old York University student to represent Canada in Miss Universe 2006 to defend Glebova’s title.

Twenty-year-old Alice Panikian defeated 48 aspirants to be crowned Miss Universe Canada 2006.

The Toronto beauty will represent Canada in Miss Universe 2006 and was crowned reigning Miss Universe Natalie Glebova at the pageant held at Montreal Casino.

Alice Panikian, a York University student, said she was stunned when the verdict came and that she thought it was all surreal.

Last year, her predecessor Natalie Glebova won the Miss Universe title in Thailand after a dream run in her country’s beauty pageant. Alice Panikian obviously would like that title to be someone else’s.

The judges rated the young women on poise, confidence, intelligence, physical fitness and beauty as they modelled in swimsuits and evening gowns and made impromptu speeches.

Natalie Glebova was elated by Panikian’s selection as Miss Canda 2006, saying the 20-year-old would be a fine contender to keep the Miss Universe title in Canada.

This was what Glebova said aout Panikian: “She’s gorgeous. Absolutely stunning” .

Though three beauties from Quebec were among those who made it to the final ten, they failed to lure the judges . Panikian was a runaway favourite, analysts said. The Quebec contestants even didn’t make to the last 5, it was reliably learnt.

Panikian will, as Miss Canada Universe, travel widely to promote a favourite cause, which in her case is Prevention of HIV and AIDS in Africa.
