Microsoft follows Intel with investment of over a billion dollars in India

After chipmaker Intel, Microsoft's Bill Gates announces massive investment in India.

8 December, 2005: Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, will inject $1.7 billion in India on various projects, its chairman Bill Gates said on Wednesday.

Gates said the investment will be spread over a period of four years from now.

The software giant will also go on a recruitment spree. Gates said Microsoft will double its workforce in India during the same period. Microsoft has 4,000 employees in India now.

"We depend on India for manpower that is why we are scaling up operations here," Gates told the the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi on Wednesday, making it clear that the firm would relish to exploit India’s growing army of software professionals.

Gates said the investments by the firm would bring computer services to the rural poor and increase the firm’s marketing and research operations.

Earlier this year, Microsoft had started its fourth research centre in the world in the southern Indian city of Bangalore. The other centres are Located in United States, Europe and China.

Gates also said India should leverage its IT potential as an enabler to bridge the digital divide.

Microsoft , he said, also planned to adopt 00 schools in six states to provide computers and equipment for interactive learning.

India has around 7,00,000 workers in software and support services.

The Foundation has pledged $200 million dollars to fight HIV/AIDS in India.
