South Korean electronics equipment maker Samsung has come out with what it calls the world’s fastest multimedia-downloading mobile handset.

Samsung said the phone, powered by an MSM6280 chip made by the United States-based Qualcomm, can help users download multimedia content at an astonishing speed of 3.6 megabites per second, media reports said.

Analysts say this would amount to approximately 10 MP3 music files a minute.

The South Korean firm said the mobile uses high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) technology. Samsung unveiled the mobile at a Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, proclaiming a lead over its rivals in the fiercely competitive mobile handset market.
Its rivals are yet to comment on the new high speed mobile.

"Samsung is proud to showcase HSDPA as the future of mobile broadband," Kitae Lee, president of Samsungs Telecommunications Network Business, was quoted as saying on the occasion.
Reports say the mobile is a product of Samsung’s growing tie-ups with Qualcomm. It has a Qualcomm Mobile Station Modem.

Qualcomm Code Division Multiple Access president Sanjay K Jha said the handset marks an important milestone in driving the commercialisation and deployment of this technology.
