SAMSUNG VODAFONE QUALCOMM ALLIANCE
Samsung phones to Vodafone with Qualcomm technology
28 December 2005
SEOUL
It is a coming together of three giants. Samsung Electronics is all set to supply Vodafone with new mobile phones that use Qualcomm Inc.'s modem
chips. This was announced by Samsung, the world's third-largest maker of handsets, on Wednesday.
Samsung announced that the phones will be driven by high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) technology.
The HSPDA technology will provide subscribers multimedia services including Internet access and video sharing at higher speeds albeit on lower costs, a Samsung statement said.
Work is on to develop a commercially available HSDPA phone which will be exclusively provided to Vodafone, the South Korean mobile handset maker said in the statement.
Samsung said it will get Mobile Station Modem from U.S. wireless technology major Qualcomm. The South Korean firm did not provide details of the deal.
HSDPA is a next generation technology for use over networks based on WCDMA.
Analysts said WCDMA is the world's most popular third-generation (3G) mobile standard, pointing out that with WCDMA transferring data would be several times faster than existing capabilities.
They said WCDMA would provide a thrust to services such as music downloads and video streaming.
Samsung, one of the major hand set provider for United Kingdom-based Vodafone, is now in talks to sell mobile phones to its Japanese subsidiary, media reports said.
