2006 SUPER BOWL COUNTDOWN

Seattle Seahawks vs Pittsburgh Steelers this Super 'Sunday’ Bowl

On Super Bowl 2006, Seattle Seahawks goes up against Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday.

30 January 2006
DETROIT, USA

Seattle Seahawks takes on Pittsburgh Steelers at this year’s Super Bowl at Detroit for America’s biggest sporting and television event – Super Bowl 2006.

Already supporters of both the teams have started pouring into Detroit, but the Pittsburgh Steelers seem to have a slight edge on this count.

This could also be due to the fact in 2006, that their favourite team is reaching the Super Bowl after 10 years.

Seattle Seahawks arrived in Detroit on Sunday. Pittsburgh Steelers would arrive on Monday. But the atmosphere in Detroit is already electrifying.

As usual, Seahawks would have regular practice sessions for the Super Bowl on Wednesday and Thursday and a light work out on Friday. Their brain storming sessions for the 2006 Super Bowl were held last week.

But opponents Pittsburgh Steelers would have some of their key sessions after their arrival.

Seahawks Mike Holmgren and his men are camping at Hyatt Regency Dearborn. This is the first time that the Seahawks, founded thirty years back, have made it to the Super Bowl.

But for Holmgren , this is his third Super Bowl. He was with Green Bay Packers when they defeated New England in Super Bowl XXXI. But Holmgren’s team lost to Denver in Super Bowl XXXII.

But despite a scintillating show at NFC, Holmgren’s men are considered underdogs. And that is exactly what Holmgren likes it to be, though they arrived in a luxury Boeing 757 owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who is also the team owner.

May be this could also be because Seahawks are little-known stuff.

Pittsburgh Steelers on the other hand had a tough run, with a do or die situation in the last five regular-season games to get into the play-offs.

But Steelers showed their steel after a string of initial setbacks. They beat all top three seeds for a comeback win, their first in ten years.

But unlike Seattle Seahawks’ Holmgren, Bill Cowher has never been at the helm of a winning team in Super Bowl. The only time Pittsburgh Steelers qualified for Super Bowl they were beaten 27-17 by Dallas. Cowher who was just four years into his tenure as coach then. So now, this is a do or die situation for him – perform or perish. Pressure would also be on Steelers, especially as the odds are with them.

The Steelers took home the Lombardi trophy after they won the Super Bowls in 1974 and '75 seasons and again in '78 and '79. This is their fifth go at it.
