Videotones may wipe off Ringtones
BSNL plans to provide video ringtones on mobiles in India
19 Nov, 2005, MUMBAI, INDIA: If the buzz is to be taken seriously, ring tones may soon be phased out by videotones. At least, that is what enthusiastic technology watchers would like us to believe.
As bandwidth issues fade into oblivion, more and more handset manufacturers and service providers are finding sense in the idea.
Media reports have quoted consumer surveys to drive home the point that most users consider polyphonic ring tones as outdated. Surveys also revealed that videotones would soon take over from ring tones.
It said about 20 per cent of the cell phone users would switch over to video tones immediately. Naturally, the bulk of this will be teenagers and young professionals.
Estimates have put value added services at more than half a billion Rupees, which is 20 per cent of revenues generated by mobile operators.
Projections put the revenues from value added services at more than 60 per cent of the total revenues in the next four years.
About 100 million new handsets are expected to be swarm the country in the period. Analysts say that with the advent of faster wireless networks and enhanced connectivity, video ring tones could dominate the ringtone category.
Word’s largest mobile hand set maker Nokia’s N60 series is the first cell phone model to support video tones. Nokia is also providing videotone downloads.
Samsung, Motorola and Sony are also expected to roll out similar handsets soon. In India state-run cellular service provider BSNL is offering videotone downloads for Rs 20.
